Something

By Jae-An Wang

Hello, people! I hope that you’ve had an awesome week, and if not, may the next one swing in your favour (British spelling ftw).

My own week has been relatively uneventful, so rather than write about how boring things are at home, I shall simply show you some questions
that I’ve come up with these past few months. If you know the answers or just have interesting thoughts about any of them (or just anything in general I guess), feel free to comment down below!

Cloudy with a chance of Kermit...
Q1: What’s the minimum probability that an event has to have of happening in order for us to consider it a possibility? I mean, we rarely think that “oh, it might rain frogs today; I should bring my extra heavy-duty umbrella just in case” even though this is something that has happened before, or check the toilet bowl for rats in case one swam up through the sewer (which I vaguely remember reading somewhere that this is unfortunately possible). I’m quite curious whether or not we can express in a somewhat scientific or mathematical fashion how likely something has to be to happen for us to think about it. Hopefully that makes sense, but probably not. Moving on!

Q2: What is the evolutionary purpose of having a neck? Why not just have the head attached directly to the body like whales or fish? Our neck is a very vulnerable point, and the advantage of being able to look around could be rendered obsolete by having eyes on the sides, rather than the front, of our head. I mean, maybe neckless humans would look pretty weird, but still…

Here's a cute beluga whale.
You're whale-come.

For some reason I watched this movie
3 or 4 times in a row on the same
plane ride when I was in 6th grade.
Q3: Is Megamind (from the movie Megamind, yes) a reference to Frankenstein? I guess this one was less of a question for me than what I thought was a breakthrough while lying on my bed half asleep. I really feel like there might be a connection, with Megamind being shaped from birth into a sort of villainous monster by society. Maybe I’m reading too deep into this. Actually, I definitely am.

Even though I have several more questions, I guess I’ll leave it at this for now before this drags on too long, if it hasn’t already. I’ll post more random questions every now and then when things are slow, so…yeah.

  2. oMIGOD POST ALL THE QUESTIONS!!!! this is great. i finally feel validated for drawing every picture ever of a human without a neck when i was little. clearly i just was thinking about evolutionary stuff. That said, i feel like maybe our neck is necessary to support our heavy af brains? Idk, also learning about the importance of the brain/spinal cord/central nervous system so if any of those features are in our neck maybe that's why?
