Dia de Accion de Gracias...a post in which I perform the action of thanks

By Tamika Whitenack

A week ago, I was sitting on the couch of an apartment in Hanover with Mariko and Cam watching The Book of Life, a lovely children's movie about being yourself with fun visuals and voices. That was the start of our wonderful little Thanksgiving get-away. It's hard for me to describe Thanksgiving break well, but it was a good time! I could in-depth tell you about the food, but I think the pictures in my last post tell a sufficient story.

This is the first Thanksgiving I have not been home, and as is typical of all these first experiences that are a result of college, it makes me think and feel a lot. Additionally, I was working on a memoir piece for my freshman writing seminar in which I talked about family (specifically my grandparents), and food, and that also has me thinking. I've decided the most appropriate way to gather these thoughts is a list of things that I am grateful for, because that seems fitting for a belated Thanksgiving post.

Things I Appreciate:
-good food, especially if i get to spend time preparing it
-vegetables
-my extended family and the special traditions that go with it, and the sense of belonging and sense of self i have gained from being in this family
-trees and nature and hiking
-fresh air and cold air
-warm covers and blankets
-bathrooms that are not shared by more than 4 people
-growing up with my grandparents in my life
-growing up with so much home-cooked food
-the ability/resources to travel off campus during break
-the opportunity to study at this college
-children's movies
-friends, and the joy their existence brings to my life
-technology, for allowing me to talk to friends
-band music, bc it makes me feel feelings
-lotion
-knowing that people love me
-the Bay Area
-Tilden and my favorite trails
-yoga

I'm realizing that this list could go on forever and that I'm included a lot of very important things and also some super trivial stuff. I think the main point I want to get across is that I really, really appreciate how big a role family has played in my life and how part of the reason I am getting so excited to come home is because I know that I am coming home to people who love and care about me and who I love and care about and that's a really, really nice feeling. I'm also grateful for friends and the way our friendships are able to continue even as we're changing as people and growing in big and different ways. Basically, I'm thankful for the interconnected nature of people in this world and I'm glad that my bubble of love gets to interact with your bubble of love. Thank you :)
