In Which Jae-An Loves Movies
I woke up past 1 in the afternoon
today from a bunch of crazy weird dreams, which is probably an indication that
I should sleep earlier. I definitely know I’ll have to next quarter, since the
physics class I signed up for is at 8 AM four days a week…I’ve heard many good
things about the professor, at least (but his tests seem to be insanely difficult,
which I look forward to).

It may not look like much, but this will hit around 1600ft (hopefully!)
In the area of rocketry, there have
been several advancements! On Saturday, the Prometheus team (the competition
team I’ll be officially joining soon) launched our test rocket Minion to a
vertical distance of around 2000 ft. (video below), 1000 less than anticipated since it was
unstable from mass that we didn’t account for. I wasn’t there, but I’ll be
going out to the site soon anyways to launch my own rocket, which is nearing
completion. I picked up the completed printed nose cone today, which looks
amazing as heck, and also obtained a new body tube (since the one I made
mysteriously disappeared…). So excited!
Aside from rocketry and going to a
free pre-screening for Justice League (good actors/characters, bad plot and
villain, 6.5/10), not much has really happened; I feel like things have kind of
cooled down since midterms. Since nothing much has happened, I guess I’ll talk
about movies.
I seriously love (good) movies. Somehow,
people manage to combine words, music, visuals, and a story to bring audiences
on emotional rollercoasters all in the span of an hour or two, and that’s
pretty amazing. I feel like movies are also kind of proof of the empathy humans
have, both on the part of the filmmakers and the audience. It takes empathy to write
a story that viewers can relate to, or create a character that people can love,
hate, or something in between.
I love movies that make me think,
movies that have great character arcs, movies that have great music, movies
that can make me laugh, or movies that are just frickin’ epic. Some of the
movies that make the Films That Jae-An Approves of and Hopes You Also Approve
of Because Then We Can Talk About Them List are:
- Spirited Away
- This beautifully animated, Ghibli classic coming-of-age story is truly heartwarming, with creative character design and amazing music, courtesy of Joe Hisaishi. Warning: may contain hidden themes of child prostitution. Yup.
- Perks of Being a Wallflower
- Another coming-of-age story, but of a different kind. I loved the book so I love the movie.
- Spotlight
- A pretty horrifying biographical crime drama film that is definitely not suitable for all audiences, but I enjoyed it nonetheless for its gripping story and insinuations on human nature.
- Whiplash
- Ya like jazz? Featuring J.K. Simmons as your friendly neighborhood jazz band teacher.
- La La Land
- YA LIKE JAZZ? People say the singing was crap, but who cares (other than the people that actually do)? There are so many ways to analyze this film. I love it and I also love Sebastian, although he was a huge asshole.
- The Avengers
- I honestly don't know what to say about this movie, other than that it's been my favorite Marvel film so far (no, I haven't seen Thor: Ragnarok yet).
- Wonder Woman
- Best DC film so far, by far. I didn't really know what the Gal Gadot controversy was all about, but the film was really good, so I don't care too much.
- Interstellar
- In which Matthew McConaughey sciences the shit out of Matt Damon (I guess he really just beats him up) as well as black holes.
- The Big Short
- I learned more from this film than all of senior year Econ, unless you count stuff about Yu-Gi-Oh instead of actual economics.
- Up
- Pixar could've just put in the first ten minutes and this still would've made the list. :'(
- Not John Green novel adaptations. Fight me.
Please notify me if you ever want
to go see a movie. I will give you food if you take me to see a movie. I will
build you a (small) monument if you take me to see a movie. If you take me to
see movie I will work in your house as a maid (okay maybe not but you get the
idea). I love movies.
Which movies do you love?

The fountain turned off... Maybe they plan to fill it with the tears of students?
Eww who's that guy on the right Also, Minion was eventually painted black and gold.

This is probably my favorite building to look at on campus.

Aww... I met this guy (I think) by the library. He reminds me a lot of Meeko, but he has a full tail. He's friendly.

I had no idea you loved movies so much! You have a good list, but recently I've been in an intense La La Land phase.
