Who Needs Sleep? Not Me!!!

By Cameron Rusin

Hi friends!

These past two weekends have been insane, mostly with cross country shenanigans. I’m the most sleep deprived I’ve ever been in my entire life, so this blog might not make any sense. My apologies.

Two weeks ago was NCAA regionals! TUXC is literally nationally known for its fans, aka the Crazies, and this was my first time taking part in that which was awesome. Nine people from each team were still running/being alternates, but everyone else on the guys and girls teams plus a bunch of track runners got up bright and early and drove to a golf course in Maine. We then stripped down to spandex and sports bras, covered ourselves in blue and brown body paint, and proceeded to go completely nuts. The next two hours were then spent running around the course yelling and carrying giant cardboard cutouts of all of the racers’ heads. You’ll have to trust me that this was incredibly fun, but this, as with most of the events described in this post, probably can only really be appreciated if you were there, but I feel like I should share these things with you anyways.

As for the actual racing, Tufts did really well! Well, the men didn’t, but the women got second which is insane!!! We were hoping for an at large bid to nationals, but second is an automatic bid which is amazing!!!

I should note that regionals was approx 20 degrees

So as a TUXC tradition, the nonracers roadtrip out to nationals to support the team. Nationals this year were in Elsah, Illinois, which is basically St. Louis, which is crazy far away. Because the guys team didn’t qualify for nationals and the trip was gonna be super long, there was a slightly smaller than normal crowd of 24 people who roadtripped, but it was still one of the funnest things I’ve ever done.

I thought a little about how I wanted to share road trip with you guys because I was so sleep deprived that it’s hard to remember it in a logical way and basically the entire trip was only funny if you were there, so I’ve decided to make kind of a stats list for the trip, so here goes:

TUXC Road Trip 2017 By The Numbers
  • People: 24 (14 freshmen, 2 sophomores, 4 juniors, 5 seniors)
  • Vans: 2
  • Miles Driven: 2414
  • Hours Spent: 53.5
  • Hours Spent Sleeping: 5 maybe?
    • Hours Slept in a Walmart Parking Lot: 2
    • Hours Slept in a Random Child’s Room in Columbus: 3
  • States Hit: 7 (MA, CT, NY, PA, OH, IN, IL) 3 of these states were new!
  • Cliff Bars Consumed: too many. I estimate 10
  • Number of Times “End Game” by T Swift Was Listened To: infinite. It is still in my head now.
  • Number of Colleges for Christian Science Visited: 1. It was wild. What is Christian Science anyways???
  • Amount of Wind, Rain, and Cold at Nationals: TOO MUCH
  • Rivers Sighted: The Mississippi! For the first time! How exciting!
  • Elephant Onesies Worn: 1, however 3 people brought them.
  • Place Achieved by the Tufts Team: 7th!!!
  • Place Achieved by Williams: 8th! Sucks to be them!
  • Amount of Fun Had: endless
  • Pictures Taken by Me: None. Oops. But also most of the times was spent inside of a van, so I'm not sure what I would've taken pictures of anyways.

So anyways. I’m very tired and now sick from this trip, but it was so worth it. Sorry this post is a mess. I too am a mess.
