Hello!
As
I write this, I sit alone in my room. Kyle left on Monday, Jonathan this
morning. There’s a string of tangled lights sitting on my desk, but I’ve been
too lazy to hang them up, so they’ll be unlit for a while. The fridge is open
and empty; we had to thaw it out yesterday and wipe up all the water so it
wouldn’t get all nasty on the inside. Now that my suitcase is out of the
wardrobe, the doors are finally closed. It makes the room look bigger than it
actually is, although it’s still a lot of space for one person.
These
past several weeks have been…strange, I guess? I meant to post something around
Thanksgiving break, but never got around to it for whatever reason. I guess I’ll
start from then, even though by now it’s already been three weeks, I think.

I
stayed in the dorm for Thanksgiving. That’s pretty much about it, I think. I
didn’t go out much since all the places to go were closed, although I did go on
a walk or two at night just to get some fresh air. I kind of wish I had gone
home, since Jonathan did and Kyle was hardly ever in the room so things were
slightly lonely, but I don’t think it was a bad experience; missing people and
friends is proof that you appreciate the relationships you have, and is a nice
reminder that you probably need people in your life to stay healthy and happy.
It was weird to walk around and not see anybody on campus, though. It was like
I had the whole place to myself.
Although
I didn’t get much work done that weekend (I might have written something like
half a page of my research/oral history paper that was due last week?), I did
rewatch Kimi no Na wa and watched another Japanese animated film for the
first time, one called Koe no Katachi (Shape of the Voice). Phenomenal.
I also had Chick-fil-A for the first time! I actually plan to go again this
evening, since the dining halls will be closed. Chick-fil-A has a fairly good
reputation as a fast food restaurant, and I suppose deservedly so. While the
aesthetic of this particular location is slightly reminiscent of Burger King
for some odd reason, I noticed that each and every chair in the restaurant had
a pleasantly comfortable cushion on the seat, something that struck me since
most fast food places I’ve been to have relatively hard chairs that allegedly
are designed to encourage customers to leave quickly (so that more people can
get food). The chicken was quite good as well.

After
Thanksgiving, things quickly started going downhill, as I was quite behind on
the previously mentioned research paper. That being said, I didn’t start
getting stressed until a few days before it was due, when my brain realized, “Oh,
I can’t start properly studying until I get this done.” I am still terrible at
working on multiple projects at the same time. I’m working on it. Adding on to
that, right around the middle of last week, a brush fire broke out that spread
dangerously close to campus. People could see the fire from UCLA on Wednesday morning.
Although it was quite serious, it was kind of funny to me in a way. With so
many people suffering through finals and ash in the air and the fire burning so
close by, it felt like some divine joke trying to give new meaning to the phrase
“Hell Week.”
Luckily,
the fire got classes canceled for two days, so it gave me some extra time to
work and study. I turned in my research paper, took chemistry and Asians finals
on Sunday and Monday, and that leads into these past couple of days. I’ve
mostly just relaxed, since I don’t take (or rather, didn’t take, I suppose)
math very seriously. Well, I guess I did a bunch of problems to practice for
the final today, but it was more of something to blow off steam, not really “work.”
Ugh what’s gotten into me, doing math problems for the heck of it…And finally
the math final today: it went alright? I messed up a little bit on one of them
because some little partial fractions side note that I never learned in Calc
(you’re still the best Ms. Huybrechts), but at least I know how to do it now, I
suppose.
I’ll
just wrap it up here before this post gets too messy~
