New Semester, New Me?
Hi friends!
You can tell that it is still the beginning of the semester because I am so bored I’m blogging more! I finally started getting a fair amount of homework this week, but still nothing crazy so I am left here with a lot of energy but nothing to do. However, I have solidified my schedule for this semester (almost) and want to share it with you guys.
Class 1: Chemistry
This isn’t very exciting as it is just a continuation of the chem class I took last semester. The only change is the TAs, which is annoying because I loved my last two TAs and the new ones have made less than an optimal first impression… However one good thing to come out of this is if I really don’t get anything out of their recitations I don’t have to show up which frees up time.
Class 2: Spanish 3
Subject wise, this is a continuation of my last Spanish class, but class wise I have all new classmates and a new professor! It’s incredible how much Spanish I forgot in the four weeks I had off for break, but I really like my new professor. She’s proud to be 71 with two grandchildren, was born in Cuba, loves “Jane the Virgin (my sister’s favorite show which makes me laugh), and comes in everyday with her cassette-tape boombox playing Cuban music.
Class 3: Intro to Computer Science
This class is new! I was super scared of taking this class but so far the coding has been really easy (the biggest problem has been figuring out how to use the department server… computer scientists hate using other people’s code if they can make their own so in addition to turning in my actual code I need to make folders and files using weird looking interfaces. I’m also never really sure if what I did worked, but I think I’ll learn). I’m actually getting really excited for this class and find coding enjoyable, but we also haven’t faced anything that isn’t familiar from my stints on CodeAcademy so my attitude may change once the content of the class gets harder. It’s also my first big lecture class, but the professor does a good job of being fun and engaging, so it’s not too bad.
Class 4: French Popular Music
Why am I taking a French class? I don’t really know but along with counting as a French culture class, which I don’t need but many people in the class do, it counts as a humanities credit and I would do anything to have my only humanities credit be fulfilled by talking about music so here I am. I was a little nervous about taking a French class, but the class is taught in English and there are plenty of people in the class who also speak no French so it should be fine. I’m also really excited for this class! For the first ⅔ or so we’ll go through about a decade a week of French pop music, starting in the 60s. After that, we’ll focus on different genres in the present day. All we’ve done so far is rock and roll in France, which is actually so interesting! I won’t bore you now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I attempt to share some of my newfound French pop culture knowledge with you later on.
Class 5 That is No More: History of Western Music
I was excited for this class before actually showing up, but it is now my first dropped class of my collegiate career! (This is fine. It’s very common to start with 5 classes and drop to 4 after testing them all.) Long story short, the majority of the class and the professor were very pretentious and rude to other members of the class and I decided that it was not worth the effort to stick it out for the rest of the semester. I am bummed because the subject was super interesting to me, but going to class made me unhappy, which I don’t think a music class taken for fun should do. Oh well.
Anyways, this has been a long post! I definitely have other non-academic things that have changed since second semester started but I’ll save those for another time. Also, forgive the lack of pictures...
