Second Beginning

By Tamika Whitenack

Well folks, today was my first day of classes for second semester! It has been over a month since I last blogged, and I am pretty sure I am a different person than I was last time I wrote. Loads has happened, but luckily, I got to see many of you in that time so I'll just dive right in to life back at Vassar.

I got back to campus on Monday afternoon after taking a red-eye plane ride Sunday night (though it was actually really early Monday morning), a shuttle to Grand Central (where I spent about an hour exploring since I missed a Poughkeepsie train by five minutes), a train to Poughkeepsie, and finally, an Uber to campus. The journey went smoothly, but I was very tired throughout, which resulted in a very discombobulating return to campus. I know that I was here for four months before and that it should feel normal, but it did not feel normal! Home will always be home for me, and I think even as I grow more accustomed to life here, I will never be fully comfortable in the way I am among family and Bay Area air. So it goes. Still, it was nice to return to yoga classes and vegetable stir-fries.

Yesterday was a good transition day, I went on a rainy rail-trail run and had a bit of an adventure with slushy snow, and then spent a lot of time at the ALANA Center for our start of the semester retreat. I practiced flute, bought books, and overall just did preparing for classes stuff.

Today was the first day of classes! I actually only had two today. The first was Intro Sociology at 9:00 AM. The class is called Cooked! and centers around the role of food in society, both production and consumption. I'm very excited for this class. My second class was Spanish, which is basically just a continuation of last semester. My other two classes are and Environmental Studies class about climate change in the Caribbean and a biology lab, and I'll start them later this week.

I was actually done with classes at 11:20, so had most of the day to do stuff, and not much homework. I practiced flute, played a bit of piano (yay, return to the Steinways), and went to the gym. I am attempting to develop better treadmill workouts that incorporate hills. The weather was actually quite sunny today, but I anticipate potentially needing to spend more time in the gym. We shall see what the skies have in store.

Because classes have only just started, I don't have much homework and am finding myself with a lot of free time. It is so strange to me how being here, alone, I always find myself looking for things to do, while at home, during actual break, I manage to be constantly busy! I think it is because I am responsible only for myself here and have no obligations to do anything really. It is relaxing and freeing in a sense, but it is not a lifestyle I intend for my future...I think I prefer a more codependent model.

I don't feel that this has been a terribly interesting post, but there isn't too much going on to share about! I ordered Meals-to-Go for this weekend, so hopefully I'll have some fun cooking pictures headed your way soon. Until then, enjoy these pics...
