Comp Sci Nearly Killed Me but Surprisingly I've Survived the Week

By Cameron Rusin

Hi friends!

I apologize as it’s been a long while since I’ve blogged. I just read my last post to see what needs to be covered and longingly look back on being able to write “I am left here with a lot of energy but nothing to do.” Those were the days! As per usual, I’m gonna split this up by topic because my brain is too tired to format in a more interesting way.

School
Things have definitely ramped up. Right now I’m in the middle of midterm season number one. As of yesterday afternoon I have finished my chem midterm and my spanish midterm and still have my comp sci midterm next week. I think they went well, but also who can ever tell. This week was also the first week this semester that felt really hard, and I may have felt the stereotypical college grind the most I have yet. What caused this change? Only computer science. We have homework every week which usually consists of writing three programs. Up until this week, these programs were not too difficult, but this week the professor decided to pull out all the stops and make this week’s programs way harder! Before this week, I had pride in never staying up too late because of school work, but this week I became the stereotypical staying-up-deep-into-the-night-working-on-code computer science student. I turned my work in well before the midnight deadline, but needless to say I’m now a little sleep deprived. Lacking sleep shows itself for me in some funny ways. I lost two water bottles in two days this week, but luckily my favorite of the two was found by a friend. Anyways, it’s now a three day weekend and I’m giving myself a little break from doing work.

Running
I’m allowed to run again! After a frustrating two months of not knowing what was wrong with my legs, I was sent to an orthopedic doctor with the intent of getting an MRI. Luckily, no MRI was needed and I was diagnosed with a more chronic pain having to do with my fascia (connective tissue). I was then sent to a sports masseuse, and now I’m running! I’m very happy to be running again, but getting back into shape after two months on a bike is harder than I’d like it to be. However, even if I run workouts slow I’m still really grateful to be able to do them at all. Being injured really puts things in perspective. I missed all of the indoor season, so now I’m just preparing for outdoor. I did my first day of steeple drills this week which is exciting!

Dancing?
I’ve been wanting to try something new, as everything I do now is basically what I did in high school (running, school, music), and my new thing has arrived in the form of dance! Burlesque dance to be exact (hear me out). One of the most popular groups on campus is the Tufts Burlesque Troupe. Student choreographers are chosen to create dances, then around 300 students spend the semester learning the dance then performing at the end of the year. It’s known as being super inclusive and body positive (both things I’ve found to be true), and admittance to the group is decided only on a first come first served google form (unlike a similar groups on campus in which choreographers hand pick who they want in their dance, which can be problematic). The popularity of the group is shown by the fact that the 300 spots were filled in 3 minutes! Anyways, two friends and I joined on a whim and now I’m in a little red riding hood themed dance (the theme of the whole show is Grimm) to the song “Wolf” by Miguel ft Quin. We’ve only had two rehearsals, but after a kinda awkward first rehearsal the second one was really fun and I look forward to going every week. I cannot stress enough that normally burlesque is not something I’ve ever do, but with Tufts being its quirky self, burlesque is loved on campus and I’d say at least half of the student body has participated in some way.

I think that’s all. Happy Olympics! I hope you guys and I find some time to watch an event or two.

A track covered in snow! It's really warm now, and I miss the snow :/

A selfie? Gross! But here's a trail I tried to run on. It ended up being a little too icy...
