I Bet You Can Hear My Internal Screaming From Wherever You Are

By Cameron

Hi friends!

First of all, apologies that I’m almost a month into school and I still have not blogged. I started a summer update a while ago then got overwhelmed so promptly stopped. At this point I’m giving up on a summer update, so if you wanna hear about my wild summer text me! Call me! Send a pigeon!

So yeah. School has started! I’m just gonna haphazardly cover a bunch of stuff.

Camp:

So for cross country I had to go to “camp” before preseason, so like a pre preseason for just upperclassmen. This was an experience for sure, as it wasn’t the kind of camping I got used to this summer, but living in a senior’s third (3rd!) house (read: estate) in the countryside of New York, kinda near Vassar! This was fun and also a nice start to the school year as we ran once a day then spent the rest of our hours just chilling, eating lots of ice cream, otterpops, and popcorn.

Preseason:

Honestly don’t have any memories of preseason, but basically we had practice and got to meet all the freshmen and got to hang on campus while not having any responsibilities and free food.

Actual Season:

To keep with this xc focused section, I’ll talk about the actual season! We’ve had one race, and basically have a race every weekend until the end of October. I’m excited for this season, but also in a weird spot in regards to running. Maybe I’ll talk about this later in the blog. Idk!

Classes:

Classes have started and are in full swing! I’ve already had a quiz and have my first exams next week. Ahhhh! Although honestly, most of my classes are more focused on content than work if that makes sense so I haven’t been overwhelmed by work yet, just everything else.
Here’s what I’m taking!

Organic Chemistry - honestly a little scary and kinda a big class but the professor is really nice and really cares about making orgo not scary so that’s nice. Also it’s cool to be starting “upper level” chem classes. Also the problem sets aren’t graded which is so calm!

Cells and Organisms - the intro bio class literally every science major/pre-med has to take, aka they combined everyone into one section for some reason this semester and there are 474 people in my class, which is insane. I’ve luckily found this class pretty interesting so far, but it has been a challenge to keep myself accountable for paying attention when my seat is in the balcony of the auditorium.

Spanish 4 - pretty boring, just a continuation of spanish 3. Had the actual worst partner for a presentation last week (maybe I’ll share the texts he sent me later. So cringey). However I do like learning Spanish, even when it’s hard. Also the unit we’re on right now is discussing art, which is so hard for me because I don’t even know how to discuss art in English.

Women in Music - If you guys remember, I took a class called “French Popular Music” last semester with a great professor, so am taking one of her other classes, “Women in Music”. So far it’s been all about the not talked about history of women in music, which is cool but a little boring, but soon I hope we’ll get more into music analysis, which is my favorite thing. This is also my only class this semester that I’m not taking because I need it to graduate which is kinda nice. I won’t have too many of those in the future.

Other things:

A lot of extracurriculars are just now starting so I don’t have too much to say about those. I’ve been fairly unhappy with how much time I spend with the xc team and my lack of non xc friends so my big goal for this semester is to do some major branching out. The first way I did this is my suite! I live in a suite of 10 people, and I only knew my roommate going in, so now I have 8 new friends! I really think I lucked out with who I’m living with. It’s a diverse crowd of people who met like 3 weeks ago, but we have a pretty good time together.

I’m also trying out some new clubs as well as sticking with some old ones. I’m still playing in wind ensemble (we’re doing a disney children’s concert and also playing Vesuvius! I could write a whole post on relearning being in a band after EC), and I hope to be in Burlesque again this semester. I applied for an early Beyonce themed dance, and I’ll let y’all know if I get in. I’m also trying some new things! I’ve been trying to get a spot in a research lab (to little success, but I’ve been told that if I keep trying I’ll get a job within 6 months…), I’m hoping to join a service based music group that plays in different community spaces, I might write for the music magazine on campus, and I might start playing with the ultimate team once a week. This one is a little tricky because I’m trying to figure out what I’m doing with my life and whether I want to continue running for the team so I’m starting the tryout process for the women’s ultimate A-team while also running xc which isn’t something you’re supposed to do. Still not sure how to navigate that with my coaches…

So yeah! Not gonna lie, life has been very stressful between navigating running and friends and finding housing for next year (I have to sign a lease by the end of September for next year! WTF??), but I’m sure that I’ll get through it eventually. My classes have been good and I’m definitely learning to appreciate the little things, like how the dining hall has some really good new food and that I actually had time to blog today.

Also I think I’ll just have a post that’s only pictures sometime soon! This is a mess because I just want to post something but I hope to have more coherent posts soon.

So yeah! Sorry for the absence and the mess of a blog, but welcome to the start of the school year!
